Open Pedagogy is a collection of open practices in the classroom made possible by replacing commercial textbooks with open educational resources. These emerging practices enabled by open content licensing (and an open mindset) involve students in making decisions about their own learning experiences and contributing directly to global knowledge to impact not only other students but generate renewable value outside of the classroom. This is a recording of a webinar presented by three faculty members and two students who have participated in open pedagogy projects that were enabled through the adoption of open education resources and open practices. Learn how students working with instructional designers and librarians have begun to help faculty adopt, create and implement open content across their campus.

Open Pedagogy was first introduced by Lumen Learning co-founder David Wiley, as a way to capture how the use of OER can change educational practices. He relates that using OER in the same way as traditional textbooks is like driving an airplane down the road - it is missing out on what open can provide for student and teacher collaboration, engagement, and learning.

OER-Enabled Pedagogy is the set of teaching and learning practices only practical in the context of the 5R permissions characteristic of open educational resources. Some people – but not all – use the terms “open pedagogy” or “open educational practices” synonymously. The purpose of this page is to provide a list of concrete examples of how OER-enabled pedagogy is implemented in the real world. We’ve kept our descriptions brief and, where possible, linked directly to the artifacts students have created or to articles that provide more information on what they did.

The entire spirit of this book project reflects the editors’ shared belief in the power of an open and inclusive community, of learning, and of collaboration toward innovation. From the outset, the editors knew that this book would be an open project in its own right. It had to be published openly (to practice what we preach), and it would serve as an opportunity to learn the process of creating an open book from start to finish, including, for example, developing review criteria that would ensure rigor, diversity, inclusion, and ingenuity while drawing from the open community to involve both novice and expert OP practitioners both as authors and readers.

Welcome to our Introduction to Theater – Learning Resources Spring 2018 book. The purpose of this book is to provide open educational resources for those who study Theater. It’s being authored by many helpful Cleveland State University Theater students, as well as Lisa Bernd, PhD, and Heather Caprette, MFA. In the spirit of open, it’s our desire that any alterations of the assignments be shared openly with others, at no charge, but realize we can’t control for this and there’s not always an easy way for someone to share publicly. Many authors of OER generate resources to freely help students and teachers because they realize the challenges students are facing with affording an education and educational materials. We realize this challenge and it’s our desire that these resources be provided for free.
